The check is one of the oldest patterns in textile history. In the highlands of northern Argentina, it has been woven continuously for generations — not as a trend, but as a way of working with two colors and a loom.
The Checkered wool area rug in Wood & Sand is made using a baeton weave, a technique that creates a surface with more body than a standard flat weave. The squares are not printed or applied — they are the result of alternating the color sequence of the threads, row by row, with precision. The geometry is inseparable from the structure.
Wood and sand. Two tones that sit close together in the spectrum but read clearly as distinct. Both are achieved through natural dyes only — derived from bark, flowers, and plants native to the region. This checkered wool area rug contains no synthetic pigments at any stage.
Made entirely by hand in northern Argentina, in small cooperatives that share both the technique and the responsibility for the land where the wool comes from.
